Avondale’s story began in the late 1860s when William “Billy” G. Moore first arrived in Arizona. By 1880, he settled near the Agua Fria River and established a settlement he called “Coldwater”—named for a local spring and the refreshing river nearby. Billy was a local fixture, even serving as the Justice of the Peace for the area.
He eventually set up the Coldwater Stage Station to provide travelers with provisions on their way to California. So, how did we get the name Avondale? It’s a bit of fun trivia for your next local meetup: the post office was eventually moved and renamed after the nearby Avondale Ranch, and the name stuck while “Coldwater” faded into history.

Avondale’s geography is one-of-a-kind. We are located right at the confluence of the Agua Fria, Salt, and Gila Rivers. This unique intersection is the inspiration for the Tres Rios Nature Festival, a must-attend spring tradition that celebrates our local wildlife and the natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert.

Since 1851, this hill has been the “initial point” for the Gila and Salt River Meridian. In simple terms?
