Thanks for tuning in to 7 Things To Do This Week, January 20th, 2020.

This week’s episode is sponsored by WorldofArizona.com. Explore hyper-local Arizona at WorldofArizona.com.

I’m so excited that we’re back this week with a special Martin Luther King Jr. Day edition of volunteer things to do this week locally in the Valley of the Sun. What better way to celebrate our nation’s most prominent Civil Rights leader’s legacy than by volunteering to improve our local communities? Sounds like a plan to me, let’s go.

Sponsored by WorldOfArizona.com
  1. On Monday, the Sierra Club’s Grand Canyon Chapter and the City of Phoenix are inviting us to partake in several volunteer projects along the Rio Salado Restoration Area to celebrate service, a key aspect of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

  2. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Delta Omega Chapter is hosting a 2020 MLK Day of Service on Monday at Project C.U.R.E in Tempe. Help prepare medical supplies for shipment to hospitals and clinics in need. This is sure to be a fun, engaging, and hand-on experience.

  3. The Bangladesh Association of Phoenix has arranged another community outreach event this year for Martin Luther King Day of Service, by volunteering at the esteemed organization ‘Feed My Starving Children’ in Mesa on Monday from 6 to 8 pm. The group encourages us to let this be a day of caring for others and a day for pondering greatness!

  4. Wildhorse Ranch Rescue in Gilbert is holding not one, but two events this Tuesday! A fundraiser from 11am to 9pm at Brooklyn V’s Pizza (mmm, pizza AND supporting beautiful horses? Yep, I’m there.) But, if pizza isn’t your thing, check out their New Volunteer Orientation to learn more about the rescue and find out about their volunteer opportunities.

  5. This Thursday and Friday, Valley of the Sun United Way encourages you to participate in The 2020 Maricopa StandDown held at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Arizona State Fairgrounds. Arizona StandDown is an alliance of community-based organizations that come together to provide services and resources to the State’s homeless and at-risk military veterans. Many volunteer opportunities with this one as over 2,000 volunteers are needed to serve our veterans over these two days.

  6. San Tan Mountain Regional Park is giving us the opportunity to experience the great outdoors, amazing Arizona weather and a day of service this Saturday with their Trail Work Volunteer Day. Potential projects include pruning, erosion control and drainage upkeep. By the end of the day, each volunteer will know the basics of trail maintenance and have an insider’s view of the park. Brilliant.

  7. Rounding out our MLK Day of Service week on Sunday, we head over to the Arizona Animal Welfare League in Phoenix for a fun and rewarding Family Volunteer Day. This new program allows families with children ages 6 to 17 to participate in everyday volunteer activities at Arizona’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter. Cheers to that.

And that’s a wrap! Thanks for listening to 7 Things To Do This Week, a Martin Luther King Jr…Day of Service edition. Helping us all get closer to Dr. King’s vision…of a “Beloved Community”.

"But recognize that, he who is greatest among you,  shall be a servant. That's a new definition of greatness. This morning the thing that I like about it, by giving that definition a greatness, it means that everybody can be great. Because everybody can serve."

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
