The WOA Show | S2:E10 | When they talk about the Phoenix Suns, Arizona Birds, Vineyards & Spaceships

Thanks for joining us for episode #10 of season 2 of The WOA Show. WOA…or W O A…stands for World Of Arizona…as in worldofarizona.com. I’m Cooper.

And I’m Amber. This is a multi-format show all about Arizona. It’s about the people, the businesses, and the places that make it what it is.

That means this is both a video and a podcast. You can find us on all the major podcast platforms including YouTube, Spotify, and iTunes. Let’s check the Arizona Business Newsline.

Arizona Local Small Business News

The Coolidge manufacturing facility will temporarily pause production of its Tre battery electric trucks as the company seeks to cut spending and refocus on its hydrogen refueling business. The Phoenix-based company had said earlier in the year that the production of hydrogen vehicles and the build-out of the infrastructure of hydrogen production facilities and fueling infrastructure to support it…is key to the company’s plans to build a hydrogen refueling ecosystem.

As the long-awaited Global Ambassador Hotel prepares to open its doors in Phoenix mid-November, the mastermind behind the project — restaurateur Sam Fox — has unveiled the property’s culinary lineup.

Inspired by Fox’s international travels, the five restaurants include a Parisian steakhouse, a patisserie, an eatery serving Mexican and Peruvian-inspired dishes, a Mediterranean rooftop restaurant, and a lobby bar. The hotel will also feature the Global Ambassador Club, a members-only club with a private restaurant, The Grill.

The property has generated a lot of buzz in the Valley, specifically in Arcadia. The hotel is expected to be marketed to locals as much as travelers. Fox has secured several high-profile investors in the project, including Devin Booker, Larry Fitzgerald, and Dierks Bentley.

Executives at Virgin Galactic said construction on the company’s spaceship manufacturing facility in Mesa is coming along as it touted the “strong returns” of its next generation of spaceships and prepares to head back to space through a test flight later this month.

Assembly of the company’s Delta-class spaceships is set to occur at a facility currently under construction near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. Virgin Galactic expects the two-building facility in Mesa to be operational in 2024.

Commercial flights with Delta-class ships won’t happen for a while, however. Virgin Galactic expects the first Delta-class test ship to be assembled in 2025.

Arizona Sports

The Phoenix Suns were able to close out both home games over the weekend tying up the series at 2 games a piece. But Tuesday brought them back to Denver, and things didn’t go so well. The Suns drop game 5 with a disappointing performance from the bench and Kevin Durant…and now trail 3 games to two.

Game six is back in The Valley and tips off…well right about now, or the same time this show premieres, at 7 PM on Thursday. So they need to take care of business, and hopefully, they can avoid getting too banged up before the epic game 7…on Sunday, May 14th.

Events in AZ

We all remember the climactic sixth episode of the Star Wars saga, right? Return of the Jedi – Luke returns as a Jedi knight to take down his father and the Dark Side. Jabba the Hutt, the adorable Ewoks, Princess Leia’s infamous slave girl bikini. At any rate, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra will be performing John Williams’ legendary score while the film unfolds. Oh yeah, they will also have a special Star Wars costume contest.

The Chili Peppers are infamous. If you don’t know who they are, I don’t know how to help you. They are a genre of music all in themselves. Combining alt-rock, psychedelic rock, funk, punk, hip-hop, and metal.  Flea and the boys are in town for what’s sure to be an epic show at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on Sunday.

Not much to say about this one other than I want to go to this show. Sarah Silverman is hilarious.

Okay, Arizona Birds may seems like a strange random hashbrown to pick but it’s my understanding that bird watching is kind of a thing here in AZ. According to the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory the best overall birding experience is between mid-April and mid-May, when spring migration kicks into high gear as millions of songbirds make their way north. So let’s get our birding on, on the line.

The List | Arizona Vineyards

Mother’s Day is this Sunday! From what I’ve observed over the years what resonates with some Moms is their “Mommy Juice”, aka Wine. What better way to celebrate your Mom or maternal figure in your life than a trip to a local AZ vineyard? Yes, we have grape growers and wine producers in our great state. We’ve compiled a list of 5 local AZ vineyards with tasting rooms. So go on, take a Sunday drive, and let your Momma indulge a little in the sweet harvest that is vino. Even if she’s not into wine, these are beautiful places to behold.

Sonoita Vineyards opened in 1983 making it the oldest commercial vineyard and winery in Arizona and now includes over 30 acres of vines. They host year-round festivals, private events, weddings, and tastings. Sonoita Vineyards is located in the southeastern region of AZ, a little over an hour southeast of Tucson. Open daily from 10 am to 4 PM except for Tuesdays.

Established in 2002, the winery produces close to 3,000 cases annually of both white and red wines local to Arizona. Oak Creek Vineyards and its 11 acres are located 11 miles northeast of Sedona and 500 ft from Oak Creek, one of Arizona’s few natural year-round bodies of water. The owners consider themselves a family-friendly winery and very clearly encourage you to bring the entire crew, kids, and fur babies for a visit. They have an entire webpage dedicated to their own pups…so cute! And their menu, charcuterie anyone, yes, please!

Let’s travel to Cottonwood in the heart of northern AZ wine country to Alcantara Vineyards. This family-owned, sustainably-farmed, and passionately tended vineyard offers guests over 20,000 vines and 17 varietals. As well as a grass picnic area, Verde River kayaking & tubing trips, E-Bike tours, Jeep & Horseback tours, private tours, a wedding chapel, and a hay-wagon ride.

Coronado Vineyards in Willcox is open 7 days a week for wine tasting and tapas and offer a wide range of wines including their award-winning collections. They recently opened a tasting room in Jerome. The Hicks family are the proud owners of the beautiful Coronado Vineyards, and they represent the only award-winning African & Native American family-owned vineyard in Arizona.

And to finish up our list of Arizona Vineyards, we travel south to Sonoita to Arizona Hops and Vines. This winery personally earns the coolest website. If you don’t get the immediate chance to visit their vineyard, at least check out their website, the graphic art is so fun. Oh yeah, they also have a cool story, host fun events like “wine & donuts” and “charcuterie & wine” and offer some tasty-looking wine and merch.

The WOA Show | Wrap It Up Amigos

And that’s all we have for this week on the WOA show. Now we will babble on about whatever comes to our minds. Perhaps, look to the future in the World of Arizona.

National Cactus Day was Wednesday hence Stinky the Saguaro and his family are in the studio. Mother’s Day is Sunday so for those about to parent, we salute you. Walmart stories.
